Job Posting: Laborer – Road Department

The Twiggs County Board of Commissioners is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Laborer for the Road Department.

Job Summary:

The Laborer is responsible for performing manual labor and maintenance tasks to support the operations of the Twiggs County Road Department. This position assists in road construction, repair, and maintenance, as well as the upkeep of county roads, rights-of-way, and drainage systems. Work is performed under the direction of the Road Department Supervisor.

Essential Job Duties:

The following duties are representative of the work required for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Performs manual labor in the repair, maintenance, and construction of county roads and infrastructure.
  • Assists with the installation and repair of culverts, drainage ditches, and right-of-way maintenance.
  • Operates hand tools, power tools, and light equipment, such as shovels, rakes, weed eaters, chainsaws, and compactors.
  • Loads, unloads, and transports materials, tools, and equipment as required for road maintenance projects.
  • Clears debris, trims vegetation, and assists with storm cleanup on county roads and properties.
  • Assists in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment, including dump trucks, backhoes, and excavators under supervision.
  • Flags traffic and ensures work zones are properly marked for public and worker safety.
  • Maintains county-owned facilities and properties, including general labor tasks as assigned.
  • Follows safety procedures and regulations to prevent accidents and injuries.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

The Laborer must be knowledgeable in the following areas:

  • Basic understanding of road maintenance, construction, and repair.
  • Safe operation of hand tools, power tools, and light machinery.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of basic traffic control procedures and safety measures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers, and the public.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred, but not required.
  • At least one (1) year of experience in construction, road maintenance, or a related field preferred.
  • Must possess a valid Georgia Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform strenuous physical labor.

Necessary Special Requirements:

  • Must be available for on-call work, emergency repairs, and storm cleanup as needed.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screening and background check.
