Many counties are receiving increased calls regarding rental assistance, especially since the federal moratorium on evictions expired on July 31, 2021. While counties with populations over 200,000 received a direct allocation for rental assistance through the Emergency Rental Assistance Program, there are resources available for individuals in counties under the 200,000-threshold. While smaller counties may use some of their American Rescue Plan Act funds to establish their own program, ACCG strongly encourages you to direct those in your community needing assistance to the Georgia Rental Assistance (GRA) Program first. This program, managed by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA), has substantial funding still available, allowing you to direct your county’s ARPA funds to other eligible uses and avoid having to set up your own program.
DCA launched the Georgia Rental Assistance program in March 2021 to assist landlords and renters affected during the COVID-19 pandemic. As of July, the program had expanded eligibility to include renter households that receive a monthly federal subsidy, such as Housing Choice Voucher, Public Housing, and Project Based Section 8. For these federal subsidy programs, eligibility is limited to the renter’s portion of the rent.
DCA has provided the resources below to help build awareness and ease access for individuals to get assistance.
