TITLE: Road Department: Heavy Equipment Operator
JOB OBJECTIVES (Purpose of the position): Under the direct supervision of the Road Department Superintendent & the County Administration. Directs and is responsible for technical work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of County roads, bridges, drainage, facilities, and other construction related projects. Performs other duties assigned by the Road Department supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (Essential to job objectives):
JOB STANDARDS (Minimum qualifications needed to perform essential job functions): Graduation from high school and preferably (2) years’ experience in public works, road maintenance, and construction work; including direct experience in supervisory aspects of the work. Must have a valid Georgia Driver’s License and preferably a valid Georgia CDL License.
JOB LOCATION (Place(s) where work is performed):
- Road department office and shop
- Various locations in the County.
EQUIPMENT (Machines, devices, tools, etc. used in the performance of job):
- All heavy construction equipment including motor graders, excavators, mowers, side arms, etc.
- All light equipment including mowers and trucks
- Radio system
- Telephone
- Computer
- Adding machine
- Punch Clock
CRITICAL SKILLS/EXPERTISE (Specifically needed for job):
- Knowledge of materials, equipment procedures, and methods used in road and bridge construction activities.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precaution methods of work.
- Ability to complete duties from supervisor and fulfill the operation of motor equipment operation including road construction and maintenance operations; bridge construction and repair; and drainage facilities installation and repair.
- Ability to establish standard engineering and construction related standards and inspect against these standards.
- Ability to understand and follow technical instructions and specifications.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, the public, and government officials.
- Ability to prepare time, work order reports, maintain records, and complete work orders in a timely manner.
- Must have possession of all physical limbs and capable of loading and unloading supplies and operating all road department equipment.
- Ability to cut grass and operate any equipment directed by road department supervisor.
- Ability to be flexible. Job assignments and duties may change daily depending on the need of the county.
