Job Posting: Laborer/CDL Truck Driver – Road Department

The Twiggs County Board of Commissioners is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Laborer/CDL Truck Driver for the Road Department.

Job Summary:

The Laborer/CDL Truck Driver is responsible for operating commercial vehicles and performing manual labor to support the maintenance and repair of county roads and infrastructure. This position involves driving and operating dump trucks, lowboy trailers, and other heavy vehicles, as well as assisting with general road maintenance duties such as grading, debris removal, and drainage system repairs. Work is performed under the direction of the Road Department Supervisor.

Essential Job Duties:

The following duties are representative of the work required for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Operates CDL-class vehicles, including dump trucks, lowboys, and other commercial trucks to transport materials, equipment, and debris.
  • Assists in road construction, repair, and maintenance by hauling gravel, asphalt, and other materials.
  • Loads and unloads construction materials, pipes, and road equipment.
  • Assists with the installation and maintenance of culverts, ditches, and drainage systems.
  • Performs manual labor, including shoveling, grading, and clearing debris from roadways.
  • Operates hand tools, power tools, and light equipment, such as chainsaws, compactors, and weed trimmers.
  • Flags traffic and ensures proper work zone safety measures.
  • Performs routine maintenance and safety checks on trucks and equipment to ensure they are in good working condition.
  • Assists in storm cleanup and emergency response efforts, including removing downed trees and debris from roads.
  • Maintains records of trips, fuel usage, and work completed as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

The Laborer/CDL Truck Driver must be knowledgeable in the following areas:

  • Safe operation of dump trucks, lowboys, and other CDL-required vehicles.
  • Road maintenance techniques, including pothole patching, grading, and drainage repairs.
  • Knowledge of state and federal traffic laws related to commercial driving.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods in various weather conditions.
  • Basic mechanical skills to perform routine maintenance and safety inspections on vehicles.
  • Strong attention to work zone safety procedures and traffic control methods.
  • Ability to follow instructions, work independently, and collaborate with a team.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) issued by the State of Georgia.
  • At least one (1) year of experience operating commercial trucks and performing manual labor.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform strenuous physical labor.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred but not required.

Necessary Special Requirements:

  • Must be available for on-call work, emergency repairs, and storm cleanup as needed.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screening, background check, and CDL medical certification.
